4 Q's of Basketball with Busta Bucket, Talkin' Some Jarret Jack

Jack!

Bryan Colangelo is pulling out all stops to keep Chris Bosh in Toronto for the long haul, he'll even bring out Bosh's former Georgia Tech teammate, Jarret Jack, to come play up north.  Jack, who played with the Indiana Pacers last season, signed with the Raps this summer for a 4-year, $20 mill deal.  He is one of the many new faces in Toronto and looks to be the primary backup to Jose Calderon for this upcoming season.  Before his time with the Pacers, Jack started his career off in Portland, so to get the scoop on Jarret Jack, I did a Q&A with Sheed of the Portland Blazers blog, Busta Bucket to get his view on Jarret Jack.

HHN: Jarret Jack was a former Blazer, what can he offer to the Raps this upcoming season?

Sheed (Busta Bucket): Jarrett Jack is an undersized shooting guard who excels when he's got the ball and penetrating in the lane. With Portland he was forced to play point guard when it was obvious that he was meant to be a shooting guard. A lot of Blazer fans were frustrated with him due to his inability to run a fast break, tendency to turn the ball over and lack of passing skills. He is a nice player, he helped out Indiana quite a bit and given the right opportunity he's a decent option as long as you understand he is what he is.

HHN: What were some of his best moments with the Blazers?

Sheed (Busta Bucket): I'm honestly stuck on this one. I don't remember any good moments.  I only picture him turning the ball over on the break. Sorry to be such a downer. (HHN: Ouch.)

HHN: I know Jack was a former Georgia Tech teammate and close friend to Chris Bosh but as an outsider looking in, do you think bringing in Jack at $5mill was worth it?

Sheed (Busta Bucket): I'd say that $5 mil per year is a tad high but still pretty good value. I think Jack can fit in as long as he knows his role. I feel like the Raptors have a very good team right now, and I'm not sure how Jarrett fits in. Anthony Parker seemed like a good fit, and Jarrett with a shoot first mentality would probably be more suitable for the second unit.  But that is up to the Raptors obviously.

HHN: On an off-topic, I know you guys had the Turkoglu Trailblazers jerseys all set but what did you make of the whole Hedo Turkoglu situation (when he jetted for Toronto)?

Sheed (Busta Bucket):  You know, at first I wasn't thrilled about the Hedo Turkoglu "acquisition." But as it got closer and the media reported that it was basically a done deal, I warmed up to the idea. That isn't to say that I was happy with the length of the contract, which was too long. We were going to throw a lot of money and time into a guy who is getting up there in age.

In the long run it will probably be in our best interest that we didn't get Turkoglu. I always felt we needed a point guard more than a small forward. It would have stunted the development of our guys, or more likely some would have been traded. I think the last couple years of the Hedo contract are going to haunt whichever team has him.

Thanks to Sheed for taking the time to do the Q&A, check him out at BustaBucket.com

I didn't mean to be such a downer, but Jack is not a huge piece of the Raptor puzzle. I think you guys have an awesome roster and I'm excited to watch them play this year. Jack just wasn't a good fit when he was on the Blazers.

If he was decent as a starter he should be great as a backup. He plays some two, is pressed to prove himself because he doesn't want to come off the bench and his being here should help grease the wheels with Bosh.
His time in Portland as a rookie is off little consequence.
